Fly Fishing - Taking Of The Small Mouth Bass

Both by tradition and practical experience, fly fishing for bass in streams is small-mouth fishing. This bass likes clear, cool water without too much weed growth in it and with sand or gravel bottom. Those conditions are more common in streams than in lakes, at least in lakes in the southern or central section of the Middle West. As we go farther north, especially in Canada, these small-mouth conditions become pretty usual in lakes. As we go south, they become more rare in any except mountain rivers. These conditions delineate almost exactly the places where small-mouth thrive.

River small-mouth are splendid fly rod fish. They take flies with a zest that is almost unequaled. They take almost any kind of a fly, too?bass bugs, wet flies, exact imitations of natural insects, and flies that do not resemble anything in nature. These latter highly colored fancy type flies, however, according to recent studies of light refraction, may actually be good imitations of the way a wounded small minnow or aquatic insect floating on top of the water looks to a fish. Anyhow, river small-mouth take them all?and how they fight!

River bass live in fairly shallow water and, therefore, take a surface fly especially well. Because fish in shallow water are more easily frightened, river bass are less frequently scared by flies than by the larger and heavier bait casting lures. I have often seen a river bass turn to a fly that lit behind him and take it avidly, while a plug, bait cast that near the fish, made him scurry for the nearest hiding place. That doesn't mean bait casting isn't useful in fishing for river small-mouth, but it does restrict its use.

The mood in which to approach stream fishing for bass is much like that needed for trout fishing. You are again stalking your fish. If you keep this in mind, it will bring many bass to your creel or stringer.

Most small-mouth rivers can be waded, which is ideal for fly fishing; there is even more need to wade properly, because most bass rivers are bigger than the average trout stream.

As with trout, by no means all of a bass stream holds bass. The fish have their feeding positions, and their resting or hiding places, just as trout do. In general, bass pick the same kind of water to feed and rest in as do trout, though small-mouth usually select spots nearer to heavier and faster current.

Whether the bass will be in the riffles or in the pools depends chiefly on water temperature, time of day, stage of water (whether high, normal or low), hatches on the water, and on weather and barometric conditions. So lunar feeding periods also have an effect, but, in my experience, are not as great a factor in stream conditions as in lakes. Where the bass will be and what they will be doing is entirely governed by the combined effect of these natural conditions.

Have you recently decided that you would like to take a Big Island, Hawaii fishing trip? If you have, you are definitely not alone. While Hawaii is filled with destinations that are perfect for fishing, the Hawaiian Island of Big Island is referred to as one of the most popular.

When looking to make your Hawaii travel arrangements, for your Big Island fishing trip, you will want to start with your airline reservations. In keeping with chartering a fishing boat, if you are looking for peace, quiet, and relaxation, a private chartered fishing boat may be your best option. On the other hand, if you are more concerned with price, a group chartered boat may be your best option, as the rates tend to be a bit more affordable. You may also want to examine additional activities, such as snorkeling or scuba diving. Many Big Island boat chartering companies offer multiple activities aboard their vessels. Finally, it is important to examine supplies. Depending on your fishing supplies, you may be unable to bring them with you on your trip. You may need to rent instead. If not, you may want to rent fishing supplies for your whole trip and store your supplies in your Hawaii vacation rental. For the angler to be successful in fly fishing lakes and rivers, he must use common sense and a well-executed plan to out smart a very wary pray. Remember, the trout your after is always on guard for any kind of danger, so when you alarm him you also alarm other fish in his vicinity. A trout?s brain is small but it is has registered literally thousands of real aquatic insects in a natural and quite environment. Therefore, you must take every possible advantage that is available to you to present the fly in a natural and undisturbing manner. The following are a number of simple things that you can do to increase your catch rate per hour of fly fishing.

Make sure your fishing boat is stealth. Water is a great conductor of noise, so check the anchor pulleys and oar locks for noiseless operation, and replace any noisy parts if necessary. Place a piece of out-door carpet in the bottom of the boat to help cut down on any unexpected noise. Use a pyramid anchor(s) or mushroom anchors for quiet and secure anchoring. Avoid chain anchors or small sea anchors that have metal-to-metal contacts, that make unnatural under water clicking noise. Be sure to tie the anchor rope directly to the anchor. Do not tie it to a metal clevis, which is attached to a metal anchor ring. A small boat painted brown or forest green is better than one painted red or white.

When you find a good spot when fly fishing a lake, consider using two anchors, one off the bow and one aft to keep the boat from swinging back and forth in the breeze. Lower your anchors very slowly and try not to alarm resident fish. Turn your depth finder and all electronics off. Speak in low voices. When it is time to move, keep everything quiet, and move the boat slowly. You can often move your stealth boat in very close to feeding fish. Keeping a low profile, you can then make shorter, accurate, and more presentable fly casts to feeding fish with dry flies or emergers. This is one reason why float tube fly fishers are so successful. Float tubes don?t make any noise; they present a low profile and they don?t cause big ripples on the water surface that will startle feeding fish.

Consideration should also be given to the color of the fly line your going to use based on the type of river, lake, fishing pressure, and water clarity. For example, if you are fishing a spring creek or a clear mountain lake, don?t use highly visible florescent orange fly lines. You will have much better success using green, olive, or clear fly lines that won?t spook the fish away. Lake fishing in gin clear water requires neutral colored fly lines and long 10 to 14 foot leaders with fine monofilament or fluorocarbon tippet material. If you are fishing a big, fast- flowing river for steelhead during a cloudy overcast morning, or during low light conditions, don?t worry, a white or orange fly line with a long leader will not put the fish down.

To improve your chances of success when fly fishing small streams and rivers for trout and other game fish, you need to be stealth and blend into the background of the river edge foliage. In the spring, when the streamside foliage colors are turning lush and green, wear clothes with colors that will help you to blend into the background. I suggest olive greens, green, or light green-colored shirts and fishing vests. The same is true for the summer and fall months, when the browns and tans are the background colors, wear those colors. Predators move fast, you need to move slowly. When fishing a river or stream you then become one with nature and do not appear to be much of a threat. I know this all seems like a common sense information, but how many times have you seen some guy fishing streamside wearing a red shirt and a white hat.

I Go Ice Fishing and Find Big Foot Stranded on the Ice

The other day I got up my courage, jumped into an extra pair of longjohns, and took off for the Salmon Creek Reservoir to fish through the ice.

A couple of years ago one of the girls in my Sunday School class told me she went ice fishing with her family in Southern Idaho and that she had fun.

They caught some nice trout.

Her thought stuck in my head and I decided to give it a try this year since ice fishing can be fun.

I could see those trout a sizzling in the fry pan.

Up where my oldest son lives in Michigan they put out their little fishing houses until the spring thaw when a number of them, along with automobiles, sink into the lake.

During the summer they build a new fish hut or whatever they choose to call it.

I don?t have a fish hut so up here in Idaho I would have to stand out on the ice and freeze my buns.

Actually because of my lousy heart history I?m not supposed to go out on a reservoir no more than I?m supposed to take a July stroll in the Sahara. But the weather had warmed up to freezing and I decided to give ice fishing a go.

The road was pretty crummy to the lake but I made it in fine fiddle.

The first thing I noticed when I got there was that I didn?t have a valid Idaho fishing license. A new year had slipped in on me.

Well, we old people can be forgetful and the fish warden would understand.

I pulled the hood of my barn coat over my knit cap to cut out the wind that never stops blowing up here. The barn coat was a gift from my daughter in New York State who understands the word cold.

Well, she should. She was raised in Iowa.

Next I opened the back of my Toyota minivan and noticed that, although I had my tackle box, I had no fishing pole.

I distinctly remembered that I had looked over my collection of a zillion poles and favored the one my grandkids are not allowed to touch.

But it wasn?t there.

What I did remember to bring was one of those cheap white chairs made from recycled plastic. I had also remembered to bring the new binoculars I got from my wife for my birthday who bought them when I pointed at them in the case at the Big Five Sporting Goods Store in Twin Falls.

The binoculars are Barsk X-Trail?, 15 x 70. They come with a very large carrying case, which I?m sure could be used as a backpack, and with a tripod.

It says $119.95 on the box but my wife paid less than half that using my American Express? card.

Before we bought them, I got permission to take them outside the store to look at the moon. The moon was full so I didn?t think I would see much detail like you can when the moon is partly in shadow.

Someone is building a greenhouse up there!

I set in my chair and scanned the reservoir. There was not a sole around and the cold was already seeping into my old bones.

I decided so much for ice fishing in the winter in Idaho.

That?s when I saw my old friend Big Foot.

Well, I heard him before I saw him.

He called, ?Is that you, Taylor Jones, the hack writer??

I scanned the ice and there he was, sprawled out on the ice as flat as a pancake.

I?m always amazed over his superior eye sight.

I yelled as loudly as I could, ?Yes!?

His roar came back across the ice and echoed from the rocks above me, ?I thought I could smell you! Can you help me? I?m stuck on thin ice!?

Some woodsman!

I yelled, ?I?m coming to get you!?

I chucked the chair in the back of the Toyota and drove across the dam to the west side of the lake. I wasn?t sure how the road would be. It?s bad enough in the summer time. I found it to be clear of snow from the latest warm spell yet the ground was frozen.

As I bumped along the road I tried to think how I could help Big Foot without any rope. There were some big pieces of cardboard from flattened boxes in the back of the Toyota. My scheme was to push them out to him and then to pull him off the ice.

We ex-engineers are full of such schemes.

My wife says that is not all we are full of.

It took me about an hour to get to him.

Actually, I found him walking up the road.

I jumped out of the car and said, ?Thank God you are safe!?

Big Foot said, ?Gotcha!

What ya? got to eat??
